Do you require a Psychiatrist or a Counselling Psychologist?

Understanding your needs for therapy will help you decide for the best care needed for your mental health.

The biggest difference between a Psychiatrist and a Counselling Psychologist is in the approach they take towards helping you.

A Psychiatrist uses their medical background to look into your overall biological abnormalities and help treat your symptoms using medication. Whereas, a Counselling Psychologist will help you through talk therapy by understanding the way you think, feel and behave in different social settings.

However, you would not need a Psychiatrist consult unless your symptoms are inhibiting you from performing your everyday basic tasks on a regular basis. A Counselling Psychologist is trained to deal with most of the non-clinical concerns and if they feel you need additional care, then they would re-direct you to a Psychiatrist.

Both share a common goal, i.e to help you with your mental well-being.
